Ceiling lights for a low ceiling
If your ceiling is too low to carry a chandelier or a pendant, a flush mount is the answer. It fixes directly to the ceiling with no cord, chain or rod, so it takes almost nothing out of the room. Ours is 14cm deep, which is about as shallow as a two-lamp fitting gets.
A ceiling fitting is also usually switched on for longer than any other light in the house, because its job is practical rather than decorative. That is an argument for LED bulbs in it specifically: the running cost difference is largest where the light is on the most.
What size ceiling light suits my room?
The same rule that works for chandeliers works here. Add the length and the breadth of the room in feet, and the number you get is the ideal diameter in inches. A room of 20ft by 15ft gives 35, so a 35 inch fitting suits it. If you plan to install two, halve it: in a 15ft by 12ft room, two fittings of about 13 inches each.
How high should it sit?
The lowest point of any fitting attached to the ceiling should be at least 6.5 feet, about 2m, above the floor. Flush mounts clear that easily. Taller designs, particularly crystal ones, need checking against the room rather than assuming.
Colour, and why it matters more than it looks
Light fittings last for years, and upholstery and furniture do not. Choosing a finish that fits a wide range of colour palettes, such as black, white, chrome or gold, leaves you free to redecorate around it without replacing the lighting every time.
The practical checks
Before you order, three things. Whether the ceiling and its rose can carry the weight, which matters more with a heavy fitting than a light one. Where the electrical point actually is. And whether the room is a bathroom, because a fitting without an IP rating does not belong in one and only our two-light flush mount here is approved for damp locations.

Frequently asked questions about ceiling lights
What are ceiling lights?
Also called flush mount lights, they are fittings attached directly to the ceiling with a ceiling plate, rather than suspended on cords, chains or rods. They are usually short in height, which makes them suited to low or average ceilings.
How are they different from chandeliers and pendants?
Chandeliers and pendants hang at a distance from the ceiling on a cord, chain or rod, and are usually tall. A ceiling light has no gap between its body and the ceiling, and is flatter.
What are the types of ceiling light?
They are grouped several ways: by lamp type, such as incandescent or LED; by material, such as metal, crystal or acrylic; and by mounting, where a flush fitting sits directly on the ceiling and a semi-flush leaves a small gap. You will also see them grouped by room.
How do I buy the right one for my room?
Add the room length and breadth in feet to get the ideal diameter in inches, and halve it if you are fitting two. Choose a finish that will suit more than one colour scheme, because the fitting outlasts the decorating.
Can a ceiling light go in a bathroom?
Our two-light flush mount is approved for damp locations, which covers a bathroom ceiling away from direct spray. UK bathrooms are also zoned, so ask your electrician which zone applies before fitting.
Do they come with bulbs?
No. The flush mount takes two medium base bulbs up to 60W and the island bar takes four E26 bulbs, and neither includes them.
Can I fit one on a sloped ceiling?
Flush mounts are made for a level ceiling; on a slope the shade sits at an angle and the diffuser will not seat. Rod-hung bars need a sloped-ceiling adaptor, which is not supplied.
Which is better over a kitchen island, a bar or a round fitting?
A bar. A round fitting over a long worktop lights the middle and leaves the ends dark; four lamps spread along 90cm fixes the geometry rather than adding wattage.
