Looking after it

Sweep or wipe the top face clean when you clean the drive, because a solar light under a film of grit charges badly. They can be hosed down, which is the easy way to do it. If one sits in a puddle after rain, move it: IP65 covers jets, not standing water. Brush snow off rather than driving over it.

Takes Three TonnesTested for vehicle traffic
Four In The PackOne price, four lights
12 To 15 HoursFrom a 4 to 6 hour charge
Two-Way LightBidirectional pattern, not a single beam

Four flush ground lights rated to take three tonnes.

Bidirectional solar lights you can park on, IP65, 12 to 15 hours of light from a 4 to 6 hour charge.

Ground lights that sit flush with the surface and are built to be driven over, sold as a pack of four.

They are tested to withstand crushing forces up to three tonnes, which covers a car, a van, a ride-on mower and a boat trailer.

The light is bidirectional: it goes out in two directions rather than straight up, which is what creates the pattern of light and shadow along a drive or a step.

A monocrystalline panel charges a 300mAh battery in 4 to 6 hours of sun and gives 12 to 15 hours of light.

IP65 rated, so rain, snow and a hose are all fine, and they come on at dusk and off at dawn without a switch to touch.

Drive Way Lights, Pack of 4

A driveway is the one place ordinary garden lights fail immediately, because sooner or later something drives over them. These are built the other way round: flush to the ground, in high-impact ABS, and tested to take three tonnes.

Drive Way Lights, Pack of 4

Three tonnes is a specification worth putting in context. A typical family car is one and a half to two tonnes across four wheels, so a single wheel loads well under that. A ride-on mower, a boat trailer or a van are all comfortably inside it.

Drive Way Lights, Pack of 4

The light pattern is bidirectional rather than a single upward beam. That means light going out two ways along the ground, which is what produces the play of light and shadow that makes a drive look considered rather than merely marked.

Drive Way Lights, Pack of 4

Charging is a monocrystalline panel into a 300mAh battery. That is a small battery, and it is matched to a low-draw LED: 4 to 6 hours of sun gives 12 to 15 hours of light, which comfortably covers a winter night.

Drive Way Lights, Pack of 4

IP65 covers dust and water jets from any direction, so rain, snow and hosing down the drive are all fine. What it does not cover is sitting in standing water, so avoid the puddle that forms by the gate.

Drive Way Lights, Pack of 4

There is nothing to wire and nothing to set. A sensor brings them on at dusk and switches them off at dawn. Beyond keeping the top face clean, there is no maintenance.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

You can change your mind. Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 you have 14 days from delivery to cancel for any reason, and a further 14 days to send it back in resaleable condition. We refund the price you paid, including standard delivery.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers you, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many lights come in a pack?

Four, for £59.

Can I actually drive over them?

Yes. They are tested to withstand crushing forces up to three tonnes, which is what makes them driveway lights rather than garden lights.

Will a van or a 4x4 damage them?

A single wheel of a normal van or 4x4 loads well under the three tonne test figure. Heavy plant is a different question.

Can a ride-on mower go over them?

Yes. Riding mowers and boat trailers are both within what the rating covers.

How long do they stay lit?

12 to 15 hours from a full charge, which covers a winter night.

How long do they take to charge?

4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight.

What battery do they use?

A 300mAh battery. It is small, and it is matched to a low-draw LED, which is how you get 15 hours out of it.

Do they need wiring?

No. They are solar and completely self-contained.

Do I need to switch them on each night?

No. A light sensor turns them on at dusk and off at dawn.

What does IP65 mean here?

Dust tight and protected against water jets from any direction, so rain, snow and hosing the drive are all fine.

Can they sit in a puddle?

Avoid it. IP65 covers jets, not standing water, so move one out of a spot that floods.

What is bidirectional light?

The light goes out in two directions along the ground rather than straight up, which is what creates the pattern of light and shadow.

How bright are they?

They mark and decorate rather than flood. They will show you the edge of a drive or a step, not light a whole forecourt.

How do I install them?

Clear the area, level it, and seat them flush with the surface. A rubber mallet helps to bed them in without marking the top.

Can they go on a hard surface like block paving?

Yes, they are designed to sit flush against hard surfaces including concrete, pavers and decking.

How far apart should they be?

About 1.8m to 2.4m along a drive gives an even run. Closer on steps.

Can I use them on steps?

Yes, and it is one of their best uses. One at each tread edge makes an outdoor staircase far safer at night.

Can they go around a pool?

Around a pool deck, yes. Not in the water, and not where they will sit submerged.

How many packs do I need for a driveway?

Measure the length in metres and divide by two, then divide by four to get the number of packs. A 16 metre drive lit both sides usually takes four packs.

Do they get hot?

No. LED output at this level produces very little heat.

Will frost damage them?

The ABS body handles frost. Cold reduces battery performance, so run times shorten in a hard winter, which is normal.

Can I hose them clean?

Yes. IP65 means a hose is fine, and it is the easiest way to clean the top face.

What happens if one stops working?

Check the top face is clean and that it is getting sun. If it still fails, contact us: a light that does not work is a faulty goods case under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

What colour is the light?

A white light. The maker does not state a colour temperature for this model, so we cannot quote one.

Can I replace the batteries?

The maker does not state whether these batteries are user-replaceable, so we cannot promise it. Rechargeable cells generally last a few years.

How long does delivery take?

5 to 7 days in the UK, after a 24 to 48 hour handling time.

How much is delivery?

Free on orders of £100 or more. One pack at £59 is under the threshold, so two packs at £118 ships free.

Can I change my mind after they arrive?

Yes. They are stock items, so you have 14 days from delivery to cancel and a further 14 days to send them back.

How do they compare to the pathway lights?

The pathway lights are 35cm stakes that stand above the ground. These sit flush and can be driven over, which is the whole difference.

Is a warranty included?

No manufacturer warranty period is stated for this item. Your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 apply in full.

Buying Guide

Lighting a driveway without a trench

The usual options for lighting a drive are a floodlight on the house, which glares at everyone including you, or a wired ground light system, which means lifting the surface. Flush solar ground lights are the third option, and the reason they have got good enough to recommend is the crush rating.

What three tonnes means in practice

A family car weighing 1.8 tonnes puts well under half a tonne through any one wheel. A van, a trailer, a ride-on mower are all inside the same envelope. What is not is a skip lorry or a delivery HGV, so if the drive takes commercial vehicles, plan a route that misses the lights.

Where to put them

Along the edges rather than down the middle. Two rows define the width of a drive and tell a driver where the gravel ends, which is the actual safety job. About 1.8m to 2.4m apart is enough to read as a line without turning into a runway.

Steps are the other good use

An outdoor staircase is where these earn their money fastest. One at the edge of each tread, and a flight that was a hazard on a wet night becomes obvious. The bidirectional pattern helps here, because light going two ways along a step shows the nosing.

Keeping them working

The whole maintenance schedule is: keep the top face clean. Grit, leaf mulch and a winter of road salt film all cut charging. Hose them when you clean the drive and they will keep going. If one has stopped, clean it and give it a sunny day before concluding anything.
